The magic has limits and disadvantages, which makes it more realistic, and it was interesting to see how different groups in society looked the role of magic and magic users. The story tended to get a little involved in the middle, and unfortunately, a lot of the characters are unsympathetic. Well, they are criminals, what do you expect? The main character is sympathetic, and so are his friends. Most of his family deserved a lot worse than what they got in the end, though. That's the one thing I'm dissatisfied with: perhaps Cassel doesn't exactly forgive them for what they did, but he does protect them. And what they did is pretty damned awful. They really deserved worse. Well, maybe in the sequel... ( ) Oh, but this universe it delightfully different. Sadly, I accidentally spoiled myself due to the internet for the big reveal when going to buy book two while in the middle of one, but the way it played out was still masterful. The characters are compelling and I love how everything magical has decided repercussions, and the generations and history and schools and friends. And it definitely sent me on to reading the next one. I loved Holly Black's faerie books when I read them a few years ago so, after reading the synopsis of this series, I had high expectations. While I listened to this on "tape", read by Zombieland's Jesse Eisenberg (whose voice is definitely not made for reading out loud and was probably only chosen for "star power") which undoubtedly effected my reception of the book, how this story was told was still weird and boring and I couldn't care about any of the characters or the world they live in. It started out alright but about 60% in, I was just like ughhhhh get on with it and stop with the dream sequences. They have neat names though. no reviews | add a review
