You can't read crime fiction for as long as I have and not run into the name of Harlan Coben. What you can do is ignore your favorite authors and all your friends who share the same reading tastes and not read any of his books. Fortunately, I eventually wise up, and I'm glad I did. After devouring Deal Breaker, I now know that Myron Bolitar is my kind of character, and Harlan Coben is my kind of writer.

Coben took me right into the heart of a business that I knew very little about. Representing athletes and negotiating contracts can be cutthroat, and Coben makes this very clear. His main character is a testosterone-filled delight with a very interesting past that I refuse to tell you. If you want to know what it is, you're going to have to read the books yourself, just like me. The only thing that I will divulge is that Myron Bolitar is a man who will do the right thing-- even at great cost to himself. His secretary Esperanza tries to keep him out of trouble, but sometimes help is required, and that help comes in the form of his friend Win Lockwood, a man someone aptly describes as Myron's "psychotic Tonto." (The only thing that would make Lockwood scarier is if he were a bad guy.)

Coben has crafted a multi-layered mystery filled with lots of suspects and plenty of motives, and while I was falling under Myron's spell and trying to figure out whodunit, I was laughing out loud at all the wit. If you love absorbing mysteries with wonderful characters and a brilliant use of humor, do what I finally did: start reading Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series. ( )

“Acceptance of the inevitable, a sign of a wise man.”

Deal Breaker is the first in the series that centres around Manhattan sports agent and ex-FBI agent Myron Bolitar. Bolitar's most high profile client, quarterback Christian Steele, stands to become the highest paid rookie in NFL history when out of the blue Steele is apparently contacted by his college sweetheart Kathy Culver, who disappeared some months ago and is presumed dead by everyone, including the police. Steele looks to Bolitar for help and guidance.

Tragically in the intervening months since Kathy's disappearance her father has been murdered in an apparent botched robbery. Bolitar does not believe in coincidences and decides to investigate. He also has a personal interest as he used to date Kathy's sister Jessica. The case becomes a tangled web of secrets and lies where no one seems to be what they appear.

Myron Bolitar, in particular is not what one would probably regard as a typical sports agent. He was himself quite a local sports star until forced by injury to quit whereupon he studied law and worked for the FBI. He still lives with his parents but is fiercely loyal to his friends in particular his two unusual business partners, Win and Esperanza.

The story is told at a good pace with plenty of twists and turns along the way. It is not until right at the end that everything is finally untangled keeping the reader in suspense. Bolitar is a well written character with scope for expansion but it is perhaps his friend and unofficial partner Win who truly steals the show. I look forward to reading more about them both. ( )

Novels that crackle with wit and suspense. Edgar Award winner Coben has created one of the most fascinating and complex heroes in suspense fiction- Myron Bolitar - a hotheaded, tenderhearted sports agent who grows more engaging and unpredictable with each page-turning appearance.

Myron Bolitar (who is 31) is a sports agent. He has worked for the FBI in the past, and is an ex-jock (former basketball player) whose sports career ended after he suffered an injury. One of Myron's clients, Christian Steele (a good looking quarterback), calls Myron and asks if Myron can come to his dorm where he lives on campus at Reston University. Christian shows Myron a porn magazine he received and he believes that his missing girlfriend/fiancé (Kathy Culver) may still be alive because she is pictured in the recent issue of the magazine. Kathy mysteriously vanished eighteen months ago from the campus at Reston University and she hasn't been heard from since. People are thinking she is probably dead. Myron says he will check this out.

Myron's ex-girlfriend Jessica Culver, who is the missing Kathy's sister, also asks for Myron's help. Her father (Adam Culver, County Medical Examiner) was murdered three night's earlier in what people are calling a botched robbery attempt. Jessica doesn't believe this. She thinks her father's murder is somehow connected with Kathy's disappearance. Myron agrees to look into this for his ex-girlfriend, whom he still cares for.

This is the second book I've read by this author and I really like his writing style. I always find myself laughing at his main character's thoughts, quips.

Myron was a very likable guy (and funny at times). He was tall, handsome, built, and currently living with his parents in their basement...

There was a big cast of characters/suspects. I liked his ex-girlfriend Jessica and his buddy Win.

A fun, fast-paced and absorbing read. I look forward to reading more books in this series! ( )

Yet another excellent Harlan Coben Book. Having read other Myron Bolitar books this gave me a good backdrop of the main character of the series. ( )
