Yet more of the same, only bloodier and larger-scale. Also, apparently Americans are the only people with either defensible terrain or any military competence whatsoever. (To be fair, a nod is given to Iran and its famously easy-to-defend uplands.) ( )

The humans are still getting their arse kicked, and it seems like the Posleen might be learning something approximating reasonable tactics. If this book was just that, then it would be a disappointing addition to the series (A Hymn Before Battle and Gust Front come before this book). However, there is also some interesting science fiction happening here. It seems there is some sort of conspiracy to control the humans, and there is certainly some dodgy human experimentation going on. Overall, a good book apart from the cliff hanger at the end -- I would be annoyed if I couldn't just pick up the next book straight away.

Plenty of ups and downs, ins and outs. The pace continues as human and Posleen square off. Kind of leave one hanging at the end, though. ( )

If you like RIngo's gung-ho, army only militry sci-fi style, you'll like this one. This is sort of the conclusion of the series, though it is clearly left open for more books. The people of Earth are barely holding out against the Posleen invaders. Mike O'Neal and his powered suit troopers are still the worlds hope, while they wait for the navy to arrive. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
Dedicated to:

Thomas Burnett, 38, father of three,

and all the other warriors of flight 93.

They died that others might live.
--
Call me not false, beloved,

If, from your scarce-known breast

So little time removed,

In other arms I rest.

For this more ancient bride,

Whom coldly I embrace,

Was constant at my side

Before I saw thy face.

Live, then, whom Life shall cure,

Almost, of Memory,

And leave us to endure

Its immortality.

—Rudyard Kipling

"The Bridegroom"

Epitaphs of the War
First words
The night sky over the ruins of Clayton, Georgia, was rent by fire as a brigade's worth of artillery filled the air with shrapnel.
Quotations
It wasn't dying so much that worried him, but it really ticked him off that his ex would get the check.
"I gotta find a better beneficiary," he muttered, taking a bead on the next Posleen in the line.

Book description
After 5 years of battling the aliens, human civilization is down to a handful of industrialized valleys which crank out larger and larger engines of war to oppose the Posleen. But Posleen are also angry, tired and ready for a change...ready for Tulo'stenaloor who battled humans before and lost. But he has learned from his mistakes. Now he gets the chance to square off against his old enemy Major Michael O'Neal. It's time to dance with the devil!
Haiku summary

No descriptions found.

"After five years of battling the Posleen invaders, human civilization is down to this: A handful of valleys in the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachians, Fargo, North Dakota and the Cumberland Basin. The scattered survivors in the Andes, the Himalayas, the Alps and the Gujarat can't be defined as civilization. They're just meat in a lobster-leg; tasty but too much bother to pull out." "Only in the Cumberland Basin and the Ohio Valley do humans retain culture, philosophy and learning. Only in the Appalachians and the Rockies do the humans hold onto their shattered defenses. Only there do they create larger aud larger engines of war to oppose the hated Posleen. Only there do they have hope. As they wait for the return of their forces. As they pray for survival."… (more)
