The Belles Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry reproduces John, Duke of Berry’s 1409 manuscript, Beautiful Hours, currently held by the Cloisters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Duke of Berry commissioned the book from the Limbourg Brothers – Herman, Paul, and Jean – in 1404. He previously commissioned the Très Riches Heures from the brothers, though the Belles Heures is a larger book. The plates in this facsimile gorgeously reproduce the original pages from the Belles Heures with translations appearing opposite them for the contemporary reader to appreciate how the text and image work together. This edition features additional essay from Millard Meiss and Elizabeth H. Beatson. A great addition to any medievalist’s collection! ( ) no reviews | add a review
