While the character of Fire is a little frustrating (especially towards the end with all of the crying), I liked her more than Katsa from Graceling. ( )It would be really long and involved for me to repeat a plot summary for this book, I realized as I began to attempt it, so I don't think I'll take the time this time. However, it is worth it for me to say that I enjoyed Fire very much. I loved Fire. I loved pretty much everyone associated with the Royal family. There was a lot of sadness in this book, but it was worth it. I made time for it and gobbled it up while on a very busy vacation because I enjoyed it so much. Great book - great writer. A companion to "Graceling", Fire is a 'monster' of great beauty - you are compelled to love or hate her. In this book we learn the 'why' of Leck (the evil one in Graceling). In a nutshell: strong female who discovers that opening one's heart can actually make one stronger. This "companion" novel to Graceling tells an even richer and deeper story. The book begins with the birth of Leck, a graceling (person with an extraordinary power) who appears in Graceling, but the protagonist is Fire, a young woman in the Dells, a separate isolated country I usually don't read fantasy, but these Graceling books are quite good. They keep the interest up and are really well-written. I feel like I can recommend these books to a variety of different kids.
Cashore is that rare gifted writer who can give a fantasy novel real depth.
