A brilliant, learned, fabulously written story of a magnetic personality. Also a terrific study of late antiquity in general. A biography without equal. (

This remains one of the most stunning tours-de-force of scholarship I've ever read. I regret only that I was not clever enough to bring it with me on the occasion I got to hear Prof. Brown give a lecture in 1994 and have him sign it.
