An elderly woman sells her life to an author with writer's block who imagines different lives for her children which may be closer to the truth. Set against the backdrop of a recession, we follow various charcters' descent from good positions to struggling to make ends meet. The parts I enjoyed most were those in the early part of the book in the old lady's voice, but didn't feel this strong unique voice was maintained through the book. Nevertheless a readable modern tale of one family's adaptation to circumstances. ( )
