A classic text on hermeneutics which uses Plato's Cratylus as the basis for analysis. ( )

I put in more time on understanding this book than any other back in the day. It is a difficult book for two reasons. Firstly, Gadamer makes extensive use of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel and Heidegger and demands from his readers a deep understanding of these philosophers. Secondly, his hermeneutic analysis is based on Heidegger's phenomenology which means that he works on very complex questions using difficult language. There's no hope of giving this philosophy a practical interpretation, but it's a stimulating read for abstractly inclined people.

Well, I haven't really got much to say here other then that this is the most extensive, the best documented and the best read on hermeneutics ever written ( )

Book description
Haiku summary

No descriptions found.

"Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002) was Professor of Philosophy at the Universities of Leipzig and Heidelberg. One of the foremost philosophers of the last century, he developed a groundbreaking philosophy of hermeneutics." "Truth and Method is Gadamer's most influential work, his magnum opus. Gadamer attacks the objectivity of Enlightenment reason and suggests that we need to see prejudices as present in all understanding. It is the work that defines the contemporary hermeneutic project of theoretical interpretation and is undoubtedly one of the most important texts in twentieth century philosophy."--BOOK JACKET.… (more)
