Oh thank goodness, Brian Michael Bendis' stranglehold on the Avengers franchise is (temporarily) over, and we can get back to actual story arcs that don't require reading a bazillion other series to understand!

Although technically a continuation of the Mighty Avengers series, the roster is completely different. The "real" Avengers are now led by Henry Pym, who is apparently on a crusade to redeem his name after the Skrulls had used his face to broadcast their message. Other members include Quicksilver (who finally appears to be leaning towards the "good" side after too long being poorly written as a "villain"), Hercules, Amadeus Cho, Stature (Hank's niece), Vison, US Agent, Hulk (sort of), and the intermittent appearance of the Scarlet Witch (which isn't exactly true).

The collection starts out with a short piece discussing the Wasp's death and what Hank has done in its aftermath. Then comes the action - devastating natural, and supernatural, plagues are befalling numerous places over the globe, and the Scarlet Witch seems to have made a reappearance at around the same time. Is she responsible? This segues into several connected mini-adventures.

Now, I'm not saying that this collection is perfect; it's far from it. But after reading Secret Invasion tie-ins that were a total disaster, it was nice to actually read something with a discernible plot to it. Hank is a complete jerk, including to his niece, Cassie, who is still a young girl and an orphan to boot. It's obvious that Slott is trying to redeem the character, and while I agree that Hank gets shafted quite often (yes, he hit Janet, and I do not condone that in any way, and Slott makes it apparent in the Requiem prelude that he doesn't, either), it got to be quite thick after a while, especially since Hank was so short-tempered with everyone. His little interaction with Cho made me roll my eyes and nearly set the book down. And his, umm, "relationship" with Jocasta, who is programmed with his ex-wife's brain patterns, is...weird. And kind of gross.

Still, I see this as a step in the right direction. ( )
