As this book is President Obama's Inaugural Address, the illustrator and his illustrations are the larger focus. The Inaugural Address is broken up into many pages and each section has a specific illustration/drawing that depicts words and phrases from that specific part of the Address. The illustrator does a great job creating his drawings to elaborate on parts of the Address. The pictures help bring the Address to life and can catch the audeince's attention by creating questions of what specifically those illustrations mean. There are also words and phrases from the Address that have different font, size, and color. I think to put an emphasis on these words and phrases helps keep the Address engaging to the reader. The illustrator's note at the end will help the reader fully understand why it was decided to present the President's Inaugural Address in this manner and the entire Address was presented at the very end in basic font which I thought was very useful as it shows nothing was left out in the earlier pages. Children experience parts President Obama's Inauguration speech with inspirational words highlighted using a different font and a bold color rather than black print. The water colored images are soft and as inspiring as the text. Teaching ideas include a unit on Obama, or black history. I would use this in a social studies class in grades 3-5. At the end of the book the author includes the full inauguration speech. ( )

Beautiful watercolors accompany the words to President Obama's inaugural speech. The shortened version highlights the promising and inspiring parts of this great speech. There are great depictions of American life and a prosperous nation. ( )

Summary: Pieces of President Obama’s inaugural speech. Each page contains illustrations along with the Obama’s words. The illustrations are all a portion black and white and a portion in color. The words are, for the most part, black, but important words are highlighted in different colors.
Teaching Implications: Our Enduring Spirit could be used to introduce elections and what the inaugural speech is to the class. The back of the book includes Obama’s entire inaugural speech that could be used to compare and analyze with other speeches. What points did Obama find important? What ideas or concepts did he highlight?
Greg Ruth, the illustrator, uses color purposefully throughout the book. This book could be used to discuss illustrator’s choice and why certain things are in black and white and others in color. The class could look through and search for themes in the highlighted areas. The back of the book also includes a section written by Greg Ruth about his journey through creating the book. This could be used to help the students think deeper about their own creations and find purpose and direction with their writing and illustrations. ( )

I think that making Obama's speach into a children's book was a great idea. The positive message in this speech is inspiring to all.
