I picked up Shadow Project without realising it was part of a series, rather because I enjoy a well told romp about the discover of old nazi technology and the blurb indicated that's what this was about. A mysterious technology which has lain dormant since world war 2 that has been rediscovered and an aggressively violent bunch of criminals is kidnapping scientists in an attempt to force them to make it work.

All the while the main character, Ben Hope, bumbles into this scenario whilst working for a swiss billionaire who narrowly avoids being kidnapped by neo-nazis in an attempt to compel him to produce a document from his collection which allegedly can prove the holocaust never happened.

I found the story to be decent, the nazi it's based on actually existed, although not in the capacity detailed in the book, the layers of story telling were good and the ending wrapped things up nicely. I also found I was not worse off for having not realised this was part of a series - there's plenty of character background there for the purposes of an action slash adventure story. ( )

Great fake myth story, without being too focused on the fakeyness (lol). ( )

This is another good read in the Ben Hope series, with good links to the Second World War and the research programmes the SS undertook. I do like this series and a lot of information is found out about incidents in Ben's past and links well to his future relationships. Ben comes across as more down to Earth in this one and even makes mistakes! I have preferred some of the other books in this series, but it is still a very good read. 4 Stars. ( )

This could easily have been utter dross, and to be fair at times it balances precariously on the knife edge of quality fiction vs drivel. Yet it Mariani always seems to get away with it. The hero Ben Hope is an ever-so-slightly predictable ex-SAS tough guy with both a brain and a conscience (and even a degree in Theology, although that is only obliquely referred to in this, the 5th of his outings). With romance, Nazis, secret inventions capable of destroying the planet, conspiracy theorists, a misunderstood billionaire, a long lost sister presumed dead, and (slightly bizarrely due to a mistake in the Kindle edition) a prologue reference to Vampires and/or Werewolves, and you've got a novel that rather surprisingly had me gripped all the way through. I'll be looking out the rest of the series. ( )

Quite a nice thriller for the bathtub or the beach with some unexpected turns. This time, Ben Hope gets involved in the mysteries of long-forgotten documents about the work of a high-ranking SS scientist during WW2. Various people have set out to get hold of the papers - and some of them would stick at nothing. As usual, Mariani's characters show much more depth than those of many other thriller writers and their actions, often due to their personal involvement in the case, appear plausible and understandable. Although part of a series of novels, the "Shadow Project" is an original book of its own and highly recommended to fans of mystery crime-novels. ( )
