In vier maanden tijd gingen in 1859 de woningen op het eiland Schokland tegen de vlakte en vertrokken
alle 650 bewoners. Er is veel mythevorming rond deze gebeurtenis geweest. De auteurs zochten uit hoe het precies zat. Het eiland, waar nauwelijks middelen van bestaan waren, kostte het Rijk te veel geld, een leeg eiland was goedkoper. In tegenstelling tot wat vaak beweerd is, werden de bewoners die moesten vertrekken financieel ruim gecompenseerd.
