Great, strong selection, as well as discussions about the selections by the editor. Good source for teaching yourself about where today's critics are coming from. (4 1/2) ( )

Richter collects important essays to illustrate key trends and approaches to language and literature. Using both chronological and ideological approaches, he includes over 100 essays. Beginning with Platonic and Aristotelean ideas, he moves through ideas and eras to contemporary trends regarding current socio-political debates on canon formation. Each classification (e.g. "formalisms" and "gender studies and queer theory") and contributing analyst receives a brief but succinct introduction. A helpful, culturally sensitive collection, suitable for upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and professional academics alike. ( )
