Hatchet

By

Gary Paulsen

Hatchet is about a boy named Brian who goes through a rough time when his parents split up. Brian flies on a two-seater plane to visit his dad in Canada. While flying to Canada the pilot has a heart attack. Brian then takes over flying the plane until it runs out of fuel. When the plane goes down it lands in water. Brian then swims to shore and learns how to survive in the wilderness. Brian has to learn how to find food, shelter, and learn how to live with the animals.

I think this is a great book to read to third or fourth graders. This book teaches a lot of really good lesson and how to face obstacles that life sometimes brings us. I really enjoyed reading this book, I hardly put it down. I think this book would fall under the Realistic fiction. This incident did not really happen but it could have. The things that this boy is going through in his life could very well happen. When reading this book to a class some of the children that have been through divorces may be able to relate to some of Brian’s feeling and it may help some children with the emotion if they ever have to face it.

When reading the book to my fourth grade class and once they have image in their mind of the place Brian is stranded on I will have them come up with some things with a partner on things that they would use for survival. We will also use some of the vocabulary words in the book to study and learn about.

I will also have the students rewrite the ending of the book. In the end Brian is rescued. I will have the students write their own ending and explain what would happen if Brian was not rescued.

This book is the story of 13-year-old Brian Robeson, the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. He must learn how to survive and to defend himself in a very strange place.

This book is very interesting to me. I loveed reading it, but it was not one of my favorites just because i could not really relate to being lost in the forest.

I could have my students draw a picture of thier favorite part of the book and how if they were in his shoes what they would do to survive. ( )

Quotations
He could not play the game without hope; could not play the game without a dream. They had taken it all away from him now, they had turned away from him and there was nothing for him now. The plane gone, his family gone, all of it gone. They would not come. He was alone and there was nothing for him.
