2234 The American Experiment Volume III: The Crosswinds of Freedom, by James MacGregor Burns (read 29 Sep 1989) I read volumes I and II in February of 1986. This volume goes right up to the fall of 1988. It was the least satisfying of the three volumes. His view of FDR is fine with me, but some of his views on the 1970's and 1980's were disenchanting to me. Burns is quite turgid and the book at times scarcely seemed like the history I love to read. The subject--1932 to 1988--is so vast that it almost defies synthesis. I cannot conclude but that most of the country's trouble today is the fact that too few seek to observe what the author calls "old-fashioned" morality. ( )
