We did not have many books at our house but we did have this one and I read it and as I recall I was not very tuned in to the historical background of the novel and so did not appreciate it as much as I should have. It is as I recall related to the late 19th century rising of the Mahdi in Egypt. The book is the only novel of the author which was written for "young People." Wikipedia has an article on the book under the name of "In Desert and Wilderness." The author was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1905. ( )
