No doubt I’m missing something in my reading of this book, not having read Goethe’s ‘Faust’. This leaves me feeling this is rather an ordinary story, one that reminds me of English Gothic novels, especially when the dead mother, disapproving of Vera Nikolayevna falling in love with the narrator, causes her death – all rather far-fetched. Similar is the narrator’s over-wrought expressions of dismay and conclusions – ‘life is a heavy toll. Renunciation, constant renunciation – that is its secret meaning’.

I read only the first three or four pages of this Hesperus Press edition as the font size was so small that I bought it as an ebook. When you have a text as short as this, it’s a shame when the publishers use such a small font, especially when there are single paragraphs which stretch over more than two pages. It’s a pity as I was enjoying the modernised translation whereas my ebook one had a much older vocabulary and lots of thee’s and thou’s.

Overall I can’t say it’s inspired me to read more Turgenev at the moment. ( )
