500 Words to Grow On is a classic among children's books. There are other beginning vocabulary books for children such as Richard Scarry's books, but for the size and the artwork, this is among the best.

The pictures are detailed enough that one can go beyond the presented vocabulary to talk about other vocabulary. In the center of the book is a two-page spread of "Country Word," a beautiful piece of nostalgic artwork that draws the reader into it.
