It was not without a qualm that I added the humour/humor tags, as poor McGonagall never meant to be funny. But he was.

William McGonagall was the quintessential 19th-century Bloody Awful Poet. He seems also to have been serenely unaware of just how awful he was. (Or was he doing it intentionally?)

Luckily for us, his poetry is now in the public domain and we can all thoroughly revel in its awfulness. You can read most of it online at www.mcgonagall-online.org.uk. But I do recommend buying the poetry in book form and reading it out loud to others. That's much the best way to enjoy it.

From "The Death of the Queen":

And while at Balmoral she found work for men unemployed,
Which made the hearts of the poor men feel overjoyed;
And for Her Majesty they would have laid down their lives,
Because sometimes she saved them from starving, and their wives. ( )

Haiku summary
Leaden-tongued poet,

McGonagall plumbed bad verse.

He never gave up.
