Ms. Doyle does not give the criteria for whose letters she included in this brief collection of letters written by 28 women. The focus is on women from the British Isles; 18 of the women lived there. Only three American women are included: Abigail Adams, Emily Dickinson (who wrote to another woman), and Edith Wharton. The letters are arranged roughly in the chronological order of the birthdates of their authors, and were written between 1399 and 1921. Several letters are included for some of the women, not always to the same person. Some of the letters appear to be more like contracts than love letters. Also, probably some of the letters written by European (non-English) women would have been written in a language other than English; nothing is mentioned about any translations. In many cases, I found the biographical information given about the women more interesting than the letters themselves. This is the companion to Doyle’s Love Letters to Great Men, which I have not had the opportunity to obtain. no reviews | add a review
