Terri I enjoyed a Long Way From Chicago. It was deserving of the Newbery Award.

30. A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck. This was a great little audiobook that I listened to on my li'l MP3 player at work while I was doing mindless tasks. It worked out perfect. Stories of Chicago kids visiting their grandmother in the "country" every year, and the adventures they ...

#24 I agree with you regarding Here Lies the Librarian. While I liked it, it couldn't compare to A Long Way From Chicago.

I've had great success with A long way from Chicago by Richard Peck, a novel in stories. The first chapter/story, "Shotgun Cheatham's Last Night Above Ground" is a corker! The virtue of this book is that each chapter is a self-contained story and makes for an easy cut-off. The grandmother ...

I just finished re-reading A Long Way from Chicago, which I plan to read with my advanced reading group this month. (I teach at an intermediate school.) I had forgotten how much I love that book. Oh, Grandma Dowdel, what a character. This may prompt me to re-read A Year Down Yonder, which ...

A long way from Chicago by Richard Peck, which is told from the brother's point of view and starts off with a boffo story: "Shotgun Cheatham's Last Night Above Ground," a great read-aloud. Each story is a different summerthat a brother and sister spend with Grandma Dowdle in the sticks. Gran ...

Finished A Long Way from Chicago. I really enjoyed it. Good use of local dialect and idioms without being tedious. The revelations of the boy regarding his grandmother over the years is a treat. Also several LOL moments, which doesn't hurt. Glad my sister-in-law made me read it.

... working through the three other books which I've been working on forever...and then I have to take a break today and read A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck. I think it is a one day thing, my sister-in-law is making me read it. A YA book, so OK for a change.
