Bestselling author A. E. Hotchner's intimate account of his 52-year friendship with his pal Paul Newman. Hotchner first met Newman in 1956 when the then relatively unknown actor assumed the lead role in Hotchner's first television play, based on a Hemingway story. The project elevated both men from relative obscurity to recognition, and began a close and trusting friendship that lasted until Newman's death in 2008. Here, Hotchner presents a complicated, unpredictable, fun-loving, talented man, and takes the reader along on their adventures. The pair traveled extensively, skippered a succession of bizarre boats, confounded the business world, scored triumphs on the stage, and sustained their friendship through good times and bad. Most notably, they started Newman's Own as a prank and watched it morph into a major enterprise that has given its $260 million in profit to charities worldwide. --From publisher description.… (more)

Disappointing in that I learned more about Mr. Hotchner than I did Mr. Newman. Also found it disconcerting that he would recount conversations that occurred over 20, 30, 40 years ago as if he had had a recorder in the room. ( )

Not the kind of book I expected. Found out Paul drank a lot more beer than I thought. Would have preferred hearing more about the films and his co-stars. ( )

Terrific and interesting biography of Paul Newman by his friend and partner of many years. Entertaining and funny stories. Very enjoyable. ( )

While parts of this book were quite interesting, others seemed flat and boring, something which I didn't think possible when Paul Newman is the topic. The best parts were devoted to the creation of the "Newman's Own" line of grocery products and to the creation of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. These topics felt like Mr. Hotchner really cared about his subject, but in the remainder of the book it seemed like he was just reeling off unconnected anecdotes in no particular order. I am glad I read a library copy of this book rather than having spent money on it. ( )

Some of Mr. Hotchner’s stories about Newman’s acting career can sound canned and stale, as if he has either recycled old interviews or been telling the same stories for years. But they clearly shared a lot of good times over Budweisers and burgers, and Mr. Hotchner has the quotes and photos to prove it all.

In these bleak time that feature men whose greed and selfishness have been so disillusioning and ruinous to their fellow citizens, Paul's concern for those less fortunate and his altruistic mien were important antidotes.
