Re Schindler's Ark, I've had it on my TBR pile ever since the film came out - but I thought that it was based on true events?

I picked up Shindler's List by Thomas Keneally a week ago so I'm glad that you're endorsing it as a good read. #139: My first thought on hearing Schindler's Ark was as in Noah and the . . ., but you are probably more in the ballpark on that one, Rachael. I will be interested in seeing your thoughts on Searching for Schindler when you get a chance to read it. It looks like one I would probably enjoy.

Me too, about Hawksmoor, only I have enjoyed other works of Ackroyd's. And I've read Keneally's book, US copies are Schindler's List usually. How about Ashes and Diamonds by Jerzy Andrezejewski? Yes (didn't much love it) - Let's go for Schindler's Ark. ... Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, Fateless by Imre Kertész, The Pianist by Władysław Szpilman and Schindler's Ark (or Schindler's List) by Thomas Keneally.

Sean, you're dead right about Schindler's List. I did finish it, but the writing style is difficult and does the story no favours. I was about 15 pages into Schindler's List years ago, I think it's the only book I've put down. I've been meaning to get back to it but haven't yet. I felt the writing was weirdly antiquated and difficult. Maybe it was just my frame of mind at the time...

The Comf ... I can't believe it, I got scammed! I'm so cross. My nice little Schindler's Ark went to someone who just Mooched to the max and then closed the account. I'm so sad! I know I got the points and a +1 feedback after the account was closed - but it was going to Ghana and I was all excited ... Just finished Searching for Schindler and would recommend it to anyone who read Schindler's List (Ark), or who saw the movie. Fascinating background of how Thomas Keneally came across the story, how the novel developed, and how the film came about. Later this evening I am going to remedy a sad situation: I have never seen Schindler's List.
Right now I am watching a 3 hour movie about the Chicago civil war. Oh, you didn't know there was a clash between the north and south in the Windy City? It's going on live right now - Cubs vs. White Sox ... I don't usually read non-fiction or biographies, but I just finished Schindler's List and I really, really enjoyed it. ... F. It was a present several Christmasses ago and I've never got around to reading it, apart from a brief skim through the first few pages. ... passed it and received that vibe those books send out.
I do have a movie that I feel I should finish and never have: Schindler's List. I get to the part where there's a girl in a red dress or coat walking through the streets and it seems pretty obvious that "Something Bad" is going ot ... ... thought it was nonfiction. Thanks for the clarification.
By the way, it seems that 64 (!) other LT members think that Schindler's List is nonfiction because that is how they have this book tagged. They also have it tagged biography (38 times) and memoir (4 times). >14 - Schindler's List is a work of fiction based on factual events. It is published as a novel. How else could it have won the Booker Prize? --> 13
Schindler's List is not fiction, but a very good read nonetheless. I found the book hard to get into, but the audio version simply captivating. Another nonfiction,The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman, is also definitely worthwhile reading.

I got the parent's permission first, and most were pleased that SOMEONE was willing to teach them about the holocaust. ... Perlle I have read Tipping the velvet and it didn't particularly amaze me, and I don't think it belongs in the list.
Schindler's Ark is not as powerful as the movie and is quite dry actually (from memory)
