The main character in this book is Sam Gribley. The setting is in the Castkill Mountains which was chosen as a runaway destination from the big city of New York. There are many struggles that Sam endures, the most significant of which is losing his sister Alice.
Many skills are described that Sam needs in order to find his sister and also to survive the adventure. Observation of the different tracks in the snow and what they mean in regards to his sister’s position is just one example of a correlation to a science process skill. Sam also uses contour lines of a map to determine how drastic of a drop the water fall would present. What makes this book so attractive is the way the environment is constantly at the forefront. Middle school aged kids typically enjoy exploration. This book would satisfy their urge while providing learning opportunities that can be tied to science skills and concepts.

I liked this one a bit more than the first book in the series. I still didn't care much for the survival skills information, but I thought the adventure aspect of the story was more enjoyable than what was in My Side of the Mountain. Overall, it's not one of my favorites, but I don't regret the time taken to read it. ( )

This book is a continuation of the My Side of the Mountain story. Sam's family is explored in greater detail while continuing to educate about survival in the wild. The depth of understanding about nature and our environment that these books provide is excellent. ( )

A satisfying sequel to My Side of the Mountain, this story has a more focused plot than the previous volume. In this story, Sam is searching for his sister, who wandered off. Like the first book, there is a lot of discussiono of nature and human impact, as well as a healthy dose of "how-to" that makes it seem simple to survive in the wilderness. The book is a lot of fun and an excellent edition to any childrens library. Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0140342486, Paperback)

Life in the wilderness has just become a lot thornier for young Sam Gribley. For the last two years he's been living in a hollowed-out tree in the Catskill Mountains, hunting and gathering his food supply and befriending the critters in his "neighborhood." Sam's peaceful existence is abruptly shattered when an environmental conservation officer confiscates his peregrine falcon, Frightful. To make matters worse, Sam's sister Alice, who has been living with him for the past year, has disappeared. This double blow quickly puts Sam on the trail to the far side of his mountain, pursuing a multifaceted mystery that, ultimately, will force him to make the biggest decision of his life.

Thirty years after the publication of her Newbery Honor Book, My Side of the Mountain, Jean Craighead George rewarded her many fans with an exciting sequel. This remarkable author of over 80 books and recipient of more than 20 literary awards (including the Newbery Medal for Julie of the Wolves) is a passionate advocate for the environment. Her knack for naturalist writing that crackles with life will have readers of all ages chomping at the bit for the third novel in her trilogy, Frightful's Mountain. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
