Work detailsStalingrad by Antony Beevor (1998)
ebook version The siege at Stalingrad is an incredible story of survival, cruelty, hubrous, death, poor planning, and wastefulness. Beevor does a good job telling the story without burying (too much) in reader in the minutia of names and places. No matter how many books I read about Stalingrad I keep coming back to it because of the incredible drama that occurred. Some historians think that Stalingrad formed the foundation for the rise of the Soviet Union to a Cold War Superpower. Beevor documents very accurately a titanic struggle between two unforgiving dictators. This is an exhausting but thrilling read.. Beevor is the very best in describing the turning point in WW II. The book is a classic. Really meaty account of the most destructive battle of all time. I have to admit, I ended up skipping large chunks, though, since the tactical details of various stages of the battle were highly involved. I'll go back and finish it properly....when I retire. See the film to be immersed in the gritty desparation of the fighting; read this book to truly understand Stalingrad as a proxy battle of ego between two of history's greatest monsters. Seldom do you find a book that simultaneously encompasses enormous human tragedy and detailed accounts of loss of life but remains one that you are still unable to put down. Here we are taken through the terror, the horror and every aspect of this bloody and futile loss of life in the Second World War with precision by Beevor's excellent knowledge and writing style. He spares no side in his brazen quest for the truth from survivors; prisoners and generals alike. A must read for anyone with an interest in history.
Stalingrad's heart-piercing tragedy needed a chronicler with acute insight into human nature as well as the forces of history. Antony Beevor is that historia. Vividly told … a wonderfully readable work of history.
