MILES VORKOSIGAN YOU IDIOT DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF AND FUCK YOU FINE IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO THIS I AM NOT GOING TO FEEL SORRY FOR YOU AT ALL.

From which you may deduce I kind of just want a book about Ivan and Gregor. ( )

Blisteringly wonderful. One thinks, going in, that Bujold writes straightforward space opera. One sees a shelf of books called "The Vorkosigan Saga" and one draws these erroneous conclusions.

Bujold is a splendid writer who in this book explores the human condition and what it means to decide who one is. What it takes to become wholly the person one wishes to be. What it means when one's agency is taken away, and what loyalty and love are all about. She doesn't miss a beat, either. Miles is one of my favorite fictional people, and he comes into his own in a big way here.

Highly recommended. ( )

Probably my favorite of the most recent batch. Illyan is the victim of sabotage and it’s up to Miles in his newly-fired state to find out how it happened. Have I mentioned that I really like Gregor? Because I do, and he gets a chance to shine in this one. [Nov. 2010]

A re-read. I remembered enjoying this book. I did enjoy it, but it was also sheer torture! Ack! Ouch! Also, I kept expecting Ekaterin to be there. I love her so much, I want to retroactively stick her in all the other books. [June 2011] ( )

I stayed up all hours reading this and was almost late to work.
This book rewards those readers who've been following the whole series--it's not just another Crazy Miles Adventure but instead takes the character in a whole new direction. ( )

Miles turns thirty and thirty hits back ... hard. This will be a short sweet review lacking in many details because nearly everything and anything I say will be a spoiler. Miles walks through some of his deepest, desperate valleys and climbs to new heights of integrity, honor and satisfaction. I stayed up late and woke up early just so I could keep reading.

One of the best installments in the Vorkosigan Saga. I highly recommend it to space opera fans. ( )

Book description
One life to live...well, two, actually.

Dying is easy. Coming back to life is hard. At least that's what Miles Vorkosigan thinks and he should know, having done both once already.

Thanks to his quick-thinking staff and the specialist who revived him, his first death won't be his last. But his next one might be, a realization he finds profoundly unsettling. Even after he returns to military duty, his late death seems to be having a greater effect than he's willing to admit. Unfortunately, his weakness reveals itself to the world at large at just the wrong time and in just the wrong way, and Miles is summoned home to face Barrayaran security chief Illyan. But when things begin to go subtly wrong in Imperial Security itself, "Who shall guard the guardians?" becomes a more-than-rhetorical question, with a potentially lethal answer.
Haiku summary

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 067187845X, Mass Market Paperback)

Miles turns 30, and--though he isn't slowing down just yet--he is starting to lose interest in the game of Wall: the one where he tries to climb the wall, fails, gets up, and tries again. Having finally reached a point in his life where he can look back and realize that he has managed to prove his courage and competence, he can move on to bigger and better things.

Depending on how you count it, this is the eighth, ninth, tenth, or eleventh book in a series--not all are about Miles or even his extended family. A good place to start is with the first Vorkosigan story, Shards of Honor.
