Inglaterra, siglo XVI. Después de enviudar, María Estuardo abandona Francia y regresa a Escocia, dispuesta a ocupar el trono del que es heredera. Pero los conflictos se acumulan: la nobleza le es hostil, empezando por su hermanastro el conde de Moray, y, además, su apego al catolicismo choca con la fe que predica John Knox, fundador de la Iglesia presbiteriana de Escocia.
