I am always saying how Walter Farley's books are true adventures. This is where his adventures start to deviate from the norm and become the surreal. I am not a fan of this writing style for Farley, but I enjoy the concept of this book. I wish that there had been a little bit more of an adventure to it than the talking that went on between two characters for a good half of the book. There was also a lot of repetition that isn't typical of Farley's work. It's enjoyable and in some ways is a mystery for the mind. Does the creature exist? Alec thinks he knows what happened, but did it really happen in the way he thinks it did? The beginning of the end for the Black's great adventures. ( )

Wow. This one may be even worse than the rabid bat one. Or the one with the alien horse race aficionados. Either way, it's near the very bottom of Farley's oat bag. Ludicrous plot. No Henry to speak of. Weird gods. Inexplicable characters who flicker in and out. Give it a miss. ( )

This was another of Farley's books that was a little too "out there" for me to enjoy it properly. All in all, I enjoyed the earlier books in the series the best. In this one, the Black Stallion is kidnapped by the owner of a beautiful mare and Alec must look for him -- in the swamps of the Everglades. ( )

Book description

Not since those first days together on the desert island had Alec and the Black been so free. Then one morning, during their vacation, Alec led the Black down a path into a beautiful but mysterious swamp. And what started as an innocent ride turned into a living nightmare. Alec could no longer tell what was real and what wasn't!

After the grueling races at Miami's Hialeah Park, Alec Ramsay and the Black were taking a well-earned vacation on a Florida ranch. When Alec rode the Black into the Everglades one lazy morning he scarcely dreamed that this would be one of the most terrifying days - and nights of his life.
In a clearing he met a tall, mysterious black, man riding a gray mare.
Alec could see from the way the man put his mare through the steps of the huate ecole - the high school of riding - that he was a professional horseman. So when the man invited Alec to have lunch at his home, Alec couldn't understand his feelings of uneasiness. But as the day turned into night and he learned more about his host, Alec's fears grew ....
