First words
Anstis. (Smiling and reaching to embrace.) Han-nah? Hello. Did you enjoy your ride? (As ANSTIS finishes speaking HANNAH kisses her on the cheek and then kisses MARY who smiles at her. ANTSIS and MARY smile and nod at ABIGAIL who clears teacups and a teapot from the tables and walks off stage left.)

Hannah. Yes, it was an adventure. The tide was low and the sand firm in the manner that father claims builds bone and muscle in horses. I galloped Dante down the beach along the edge of the water. We sent up sprays of water and scattered the sandpipers. When we got to the end by the rocks, Dante slowed to a high-stepping pace, that I wanted to go on forever. He arched his neck, raised his back, snorted and stepped out.

Anstis. You were on your own? Your father didn’t go with you?
Hannah. I could not find him. I rode with Abigail. She is my dear companion. (ANSTIS frowns. Mary shakes her head and clucks.).
Quotations
Hannah: My love, you know how to please me. I adore hearing you say you adore my poetry. And here’s a kiss for you.
HANNAH kisses a billet-doux and drops it out the window, just as ROWLAND strides into view from SR. He looks at the note flying in the air, and then he sees PETER’s hand reaching out of the bush to grab it. HANNAH is horrified at what’s happening, so petrified she says nothing.
Rowland: What? What’s that? Who’s in that shrub?
He thrusts his walking stick into the shrub.
Peter: Mon Dieu!
PETER runs out of the bush and away from ROWLAND, in front of the house and toward SL.
Rowland: Stop, you cowardly Frenchman. Stop and face me like a man.
PETER continues running SR until he’s offstage. ROWLAND stomps up the stairs to HANNAH’s bed-room.
