De huwelijksgasten vragen zich af waarom het nemen van de bruidsfoto’s toch zo lang moet duren. En het vervolg laat zich raden bij de bochtige wegen rond het zomerhuis in Maine en het rijden met een onervaren chauffeur. De twee families blijven radeloos achter na het noodlottige ongeluk, en ieder moet de eigen levensdraad weer oppakken. Enige zomers later komen de beide gezinnen na een heftige gebeurtenis weer tot elkaar en kan het dodelijke ongeluk een plaats in hun leven krijgen, mede door het zicht op nieuw geluk. Van de Amerikaanse schrijfster verscheen eerder 'De weg door het park'. Ze heeft een fraaie woordkeus, een wat afstandelijke schrijftrant en beschrijft karakters en omgeving minutieus: je ziet de film zo voor je (de filmrechten van 'De weg door het park' zijn trouwens al verkocht aan Disney). Dat heeft op de lezer ook wel een vertragend effect, mede door de vele bijfiguren die ze voor het verhaal nodig had. Al met al een mooie roman, waarvan er geen dertien in een dozijn gaan. Voor de liefhebbers van een goed gecomponeerd, dieper gravend verhaal. | |

I liked the characters and could relate to them. Overall I liked the book and enjoyed how the writer framed the story. However it seemed to get rather choppy in places and the end seemed rushed. My other nitpick is that there were a few places where an expletive was inserted into the dialogue where it just didn't fit. Now I'm not offended by four-letter-words generally, but language just for the sake of having it... not so much. It needs to add to the story and be in character for the people in it. Didn't always happen here.
Overall, however, a fine read.
