My father worked for some ten years in the signalling drawing office at Derby, and often took his lunch in the locomotive works canteen. He was always struck by the history of the works, and the great feeling of continuity that taking lunch where generations of railway workers had done before him gave him.

I was appalled a few years ago, to stumble across the remains of Derby works when trying to find my way through the maze that is Derby's inner ring road. This great establishment, with a history going back to 1838, had been almost totally erased. A few sad buildings remained, semi-derelict and with no indication as to their former function. I was only glad that my father was no longer alive to see the almost total disregard for the past. I'm not speaking in any sort of nostalgic way; it is always necessary to move forward. Rather, the destruction of Derby works seemed to say that the work and achievements of all those workers counted for nothing any longer; and that is an insult to their memory. Brian Radford's seminal book goes some way to redressing that balance. ( )
