The Derby factory, established in the mid-18th century, was amongst the most prolific of the English porcelain works. The high standard of the ware, with the exceptional talents of the many Derby painters established a reputation for quality which endures today. This book with its numerous illustrations of fine Derby pieces from collections throughout the world, reinforces that reputation.

The author is Curator of the Royal Crown Derby museum, and his thorough knowledge of Derby porcelain, and extensive research is revealed in this book. Much documentary evidence is presented for the first time, including visitors' accounts of the factory, which reveal the extent of its reputation. As well as a brief history, there are chapters devoted to the various wares, and useful biographies of modellers, painters and gilders. The old pattern books are described in full for the first time.

Derby Porcelain 1748-1848, An Illustrated Guide , is certain to supercede the author's earlier Derby Porcelain as the standard reference book on the subject.
