NCLA Review - In this embellishment on the story of Jonah, God appoints an angelfish to hold try-outs to find the perfect fish to swallow Jonah. Many ocean creatures are considered, but they are, by turns, too small, too ferocious, too flat, for the job. Finally, he comes across Specialfish who has a talent for swallowing things. When Jonah drops from the boat, Specialfish swallows him with very little fanfare and promptly spits him back out again. We never see Jonah’s face, just his hairy legs and feet protruding from the whale’s mouth. The simple text of this book communicates the moral in a way that young children will easily understand. Children will also appreciate the book’s subtle, kid-accessible humor. The beautifully detailed illustrations, which add much of the humor to the story, are what make the book stand out.
