The Lightning Thief is about a boy named Percy. He hasn't seen his dad since he was born. Percy was very dyslexic he could read Greek letters very well because of his dyslexia. Percy always had a special talent with water. He didn't know that his father was a Greek god Poseidon . The only reason why his father left was because he didn't want Percy to get in danger.

This book was interesting to read because it is about a 12 year old boy named Percy Jackson who doesn't know that he is the son of Poseidon. He gets accused by the god named Zeus for stealing his lightning bolt. Percy gets chased by monsters and creatures and was saved by his close friend Grover, who is a half goat and half boy. Grover took Percy to a camp for Half-Bloods. Percy met new friends who are like him, he wanted to prove the gods that he is not guilty so he went and looked for the Lightning Bolt with his friend Grover and Annabeth the daughter of Athena. They travelled to many places and fought many monsters searching for the lightning bolt and eventually they found it. They travelled back to the Empire State Building where Olympus.

If you read the first book, you will wanna read the whole series!!!!!

Riordan, Rick. The Lightning Thief. New York: Disney Hyperion Books, 2006.
Characters: Percy Jackson, Grover, Annabeth, Zeus, Hades, Ares, Poseidon, Luke.
Setting: New York, Camp Half-Blood
Theme: Identity, family, Greek mythology.
Genre: Fantasy
Golden Quote: “Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways.
Summary: Percy Jackson is young 6th grader who finds out that his is half human and half god. His father is Poseidon, the god of the sea. Percy is taken to camp Half-Blood where he meets other kids his age, who are also half-blooded. The camp provides Percy and his friend with a safe environment, free from the attacks of monsters that prey on half-blooded kids. During his time at camp, he finds out that Zeus lost his master bolt, and Zeus blames Poseidon. In order to help protect his father and feeling the need to go on a quest himself, he and his friends, Grover and Annabeth try to track down the whereabouts of the master bolt. During their journey, they encounter a variety of different monsters and gods that tests the children’s courage, strength and wit. Percy eventually finds out who originally took the master bolt, and who that person works for and decides that he is not ready to take on the responsibilities of being a half-blood. Percy decides that he will stay in a normal school for his 7th grade year, as opposed to staying with other half-blood children.
Audience: Elementary school and above.
Curriculum: Leisure reading, introduction of Greek Mythology.
Personal Response: The book is excellently written and the descriptions of the surroundings and monsters that Percy and his friend’s encounters are very vivid. The story was very well thought out and the idea of what happens to kids who are part human and part god definitely raises the reader’s curiosity. The story is very engaging and it keeps you guessing on who stole Zeus’s master bolt as more clues are revealed. In this sense, the book can be classified as fantasy, with some mystery aspects as well. I believe that this would be a great book to introduce to 5th graders, especially boys to the joys of reading for leisure.

The Book You Should Get

Hello I'm going to be telling you about a very good book called Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. This book gives imagination a whole new meaning because it’s very funny and it’s about Greek gods and their sons and daughters. A important character to point out in this book is Percy Jackson a kid with A D H D, bad grades and bad behavior but doesn’t know that he’s the son of Poseidon. He also doesn’t know that his mother who doesn’t see him a lot knows everything about his father but she doesn’t tell Percy. They call Percy a half-blood because he’s half human, half god. During the book Percy gets sent to a camp for his kind called Camp Half-Blood and then things get interesting but I’m not gonna ruin it for you people who are interested. In my opinion this book is very good because it shows passion and it is very descriptive. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense, has a good imagination, and love their mothers. That's my description on why Percy Jackson is a very good book for people of every age.

Personal Review: Great ilistrations vivid and colorful. A well developed story which is easy to folow and understand from one frame to the next. A good use of color.

Clasroom extensions: Can be used to give background on Greek Mythology. Can be used to help students draw connections between ancient ideald and modern ideals.

Summary: This book is a variation of Percy Jackson and the Olympian, only it’s in graphic novel form. The story is about a young teenage demigod, son of a Greek god and a mortal woman. He’s accused of stealing his uncles lightening rod, and throughout the book, he’s targeted because the gods are angry with him for supposedly taking the rod. This book is about him training and getting ready for battle for whatever comes after him while he tries to clear his name and save his mom at the same time.
Personal reaction: I loved the original book. The graphic novel was even better! It was nice to read the story and visualized the story as well. I do think some important details were left out, but you get the jest of the story.
Classroom extension:
1) This version of the book would be perfect for a compare and contrast exercise/assignment between the graphic novel and the original.
2) This book would also be good for struggling readers that may not follow the original book very well.

For all the kids out there who believe in their magical powers and believe in a whole separate world, this book represents those feelings perfectly. Rick Riordan does a fantastic job of combining the half-blood world with the world of regular mortals, mostly within the boundaries of New York City. It is a fantasy world within reality.

This is the first novel in this series and immediately sets the stage for the problems and adventures of the next four books. The characters are easy to fall in love with and loathe at the same time. Try not to make any predictions with these books because there is virtually no chance any of them will be correct. Not that predictions are easy to make: each book has its own prophecy that doesn't make any sense at all until the end, a perfect way to keep the reader glued to the pages.

Riordan's study of Greek history is obvious and he does a great job of teaching the reader Greek mythology. It is hard not to feel a fascination towards the Greeks after starting this series. Any author who can combine an ancient country into a modern world successfully is clearly talented, and this is exactly what Riordan does. ( )

This is the graphic novel version of The Lightening Thief. The illustrations are colorful, incredible, and convey the action and adventure of the story. It is an interesting take on the traditional Perseus myths. This could be a great novel for transitional readers, and because it is part of a traditional novel series, they may more easily move into the traditional novels later in the series. Even if not, they still get the satisfaction and benefits of reading the story.

The Lightening Thief is about a boy named Percy Jackson who lives with his mother but to whom odd things happen. It quickly comes to light that he is the son of the god, Poseidon. In this first book, he is tasked with finding Zeus's lightening bolt, and he encounters many mythical creatures and monsters in his journey to do so. He also finds a few friends who help him accomplish his task. ( )

It was a great way to catch up on the story line. It was okay as far as graphic novels go. The illustrations are more realistic than expected and accurate, as far as sticking to the original story. Of course, many scenes are missed, but it is just as exciting to read as the novel. This may have more to do with Riordan's quality plot than anything else. Recommended, especially for comic book fans and reluctant readers. ( )

This book allows Greek mythology to be a fun subject of study. It inspired me to look up the myths and see what was changed and what was kept the same in the series. Percy was a likeable character and he and his friends were at times comical. ( )

The Lightning Thief is an amazing fiction book. It is about a young boy named Percy and in this book he has so many adventures to to try to do one thing, that one thing is to prove he is innocent. If struggles weren't enough in life for this boy, he has to survive and fight his way to Zues one of the gods and prove to Zues that he is not the one who stole his stolen prperty. He also has to save his mom, thats whats makeing him try to stay alive for her. Along the journey he has to stay alive and fight off monsters so he can get to Zues and get his mom back. ( )
  isaacrodriguez | Sep 14, 2012 |
This leaves out far too much of the main plot points of the original novel to be considered any decent. And the ending was rank. ( )

Percy Jackson and the Olympians
The Lightning Thief
By, Rick Riodan

Percy Jackson went to a boarding school called Yancy Academy, a school for troubled kid. On a normal school field trip to a Museum Percy's Pre-Algebra teacher turned into a bat-like monster. Soon Percy's life is turned upside down when his mom is kidnapped and is being held in the underworld Hades. He learns that he is the legendary Poseidon's son and that many monsters want him dead. Then Zues's master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy is the prime suspect. Soon, he finds himself on a quest to find out who stole the lightning bolt. He soon finds out that the ardest thing to do is to stay alive.

This book's biggest strength is action, on almost every page there is some kind of action, This author has a way to hook you into asking the question what will happen next? This book is Fantasy because there is alot of Greek Mythoogy and mythical creature's in this book. This author has a talent of making you think your actually there. I like this book because he is (or thinks he is) normal and then he turns out to be a hero.

The movie is VERY different from the book, I was very supprised. ( )

Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief is a good book. It is about a boy who is a demigod. This means that he is half ancient god half human. He doesn't know this yet until weird things start to happen to him. Percy the with the help of his friend and protecter Grover which is a satyr go to camp BloodHoof which is a camp for special kids like Percy. In the trip to camp BloodHoof Percy loses his mother to Hades. This book is about Percy trying to convince the gods that he did not steal Zeus's thunderbolt. He also try's to save his mother in all this commotion.

I really like this book. This book should be recommended for children and teenagers. It is a good book because it shows Percy trying to figure out how to control his powers. It also is a great way to study the greek gods. This book has action, mythology, and romance. This book got 3 stars because even though its is a great series it could have went a little more in depth with Percy. ( )

My introduction to the Percy Jackson series was through watching the movie for this book, which piqued my interest enough to get me to read it. Good job movie!!!

The first thing that struck me not too far into the book was how much the movie varied from the original work. After reading the whole thing, this disappointed me quite a bit, because there were a lot of pretty cool scenes in the book that I would have loved to see on screen. I assume that was done to fit the movie into standards that work for the target audience, but it would have been so awesome to see some of these explosions and fights!

5P 4Q

This is a graphic novel adaptation of the immensely popular first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. With the graphic illustrations and high-quality adaptation from the original novel, this is sure to be a popular alternative for reluctant readers who don't want to be left out of the conversation. I think it is also appropriate for readers who enjoyed the original version of the Lightning Thief and want to experience the story visually. However, I think that due to the graphic novel format, the story makes some minor cuts and limits internal thinking and external conversations that span more pages in the original. This doesn't affect the quality too much, and shouldn't be noticeable for a reader who is new to the story. ( )

4Q
5P

The stunning illustrations in this graphic novel version of The Lightning Thief bring the characters and settings to life so much so that one might think they would spring off the page! Children who enjoy both graphic novels and The Lightning Thief will love this rendition of the tale with its vivid, bold artwork. The only thing that keeps it from 5Q is that it is an exact retelling of the story and Rocco does not use the illustrations to add depth to the story, but simply to retell it almost exactly. While the illustrations are stunning, I would have preferred them to add more to the story.
