... I will do a reread of Homestead, on the short list in 2001. According to my tags, I've read ten Orange Prize Books. On Beauty got 3.5 stars, Home got 4.5 stars, Half of A Yellow Sun got the coveted 5-star rating, with the other seven books rated at 4 stars by me. Go Orange!

Thanks for creating this thread. I'm in, and I think I'll read at least one of the recent winners that I already have: On Beauty by Zadie Smith, Small Island by Andrea Levy, or Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Looking at what's on my TBR that's also Orange, The Idea of Perfection seems to be about it, although I've read quite a few of the short list titles already. 3. On Beauty, Zadie Smith I got this for myself when xmas shopping for 2006. It is part of 1,001 books you must read before you die. I gave up on it. I just didn't care about the middle-class white liberal family.

      26. White Teeth by Zadie Smith - a real pleasure, I wouldn't have purchased because I did not really enjoy On Beauty all that much but since it was a b'day gift I felt obliged and I'm really happy I did - it's a much better all around story.

Zadie Smith's White Teeth and On Beauty examines black mothers of bi-racial daughters. Recommend both highly. Not sure this is high literature, but it's so compelling and human, it doesn't really matter. Diane Rehm interviewed Smith when "On Beauty" came out in 2005. Listen here: ...
