We Need the Holy Spirit It's time for us to get hold of the Holy Spirit---or rather, to let him get hold of us. Pastor Jim Cymbala of the Brooklyn Tabernacle cuts through the theological clutter about the Holy Spirit with this fundamental truth: We need the Spirit desperately. All our cleverness can't transform a single crack addict, heal the heart of a rape victim, or draw a jaded businessman to Christ. Only God's Spirit can do that. Drawing examples from the Bible and from the sidewalks of New York City, Fresh Power shows what happens when the Spirit of God moves in our midst. He longs to reveal the mind of God to us and to release heaven's limitless resources to meet the desperate needs around us. Fresh Power will expand your vision for what God can and will do, and inspire you to pray like never before for the power of the Spirit in your church---and in you.

Well-written book focusing on the power of the Holy Spirit which the author feels is the missing link to blessings and usefulness and empowerment in the Christian church today. Cymbala decries the proliferation of committees, programs, and meetings in churches instead of prayer and preaching under the power of the Holy Spirit. "Without this divine power and boldness we tend to shy away from confronting the world head-on. We retreat into discussions about how terrible everything is around us." He comes down hard on charlatans and frauds who promote the "latest trendy manifestations" or try to convince people they must claim promises, stand on them and deny reality. Cymbala, the pastor of Brooklyn Tabernacle Church, backs up his claims of Holy Spirit empowerment by the stories of changed lives as his church reaches out to the addicted, jaded and despairing people that come to the church for help and healing. Calling the church to rely on the Spirit rather than gimmicks, fades, or trends, Cymbala describes that power God has in store for the believer. At its essence, Fresh Power follows the work of the Spirit recorded in the book of Acts, offering contemporary examples of the Spirit’s power active in the church. Cymbala challenges the church to live and minister in the Spirit’s power, while mourning the spiritual emptiness in many systems and methodologies. B ( )
