These days it seems like a whole ton of big time mystery authors want to get into the teen bestselling book author ranks as well. This is Kathy Reich's entry, and one of the better of these entries into the genre.

It's the story of Tory Brennan (Temperance Brennan's great niece), and her three friends, Shelton, Hiram and Ben. They get into trouble a lot. All their parents all work on a small island called Loggerhead. It holds lots of secrets and one of them, a dog tag, is revealed to the four kids. From there their adventure begins. One that gets them shot at and has them going through life altering changes.

It's definitely not chick lit. Just as the promos material claimed, nearly every chapter was chock full of action. What I didn't love was the overabundance of pop culture allusion and general usage.

But, hey, Tory's from Massachusetts, always a good thing, and all the characters are unique and interesting. My favorite though was Cooper the dog. Animals can be the hardest to write I think, and Cooper was written brilliantly.

It's a good mix of fantasy, real world and science, though sometimes the scientific explanations got a little long winded. But, on the whole, definitely a four star novel. ( )

This is Kathy Reichs first book for the young adult audience, and wow what a beginning. As an avid reader of the Bones series I was interested to see where she would go with this book. The links to Bones are there as Tory is the niece of Temperance Brennan. After the death of her mother, she goes to live with her father live on an island reserved for the faculty who work at the remote research facility on a nearby island. Tory doesn't fit in with the kids at her school, but she has made an unlikely group of friends, all boys. She and her friends often explore the research island. Often exploring the Facility on the Island, the group find a puppy locked up and decide to break Coop out and hide him. The dog however, is sick and quickly infects Tory and her friends. They begin having hot flashes, blacking out, and using bursts of adrenaline to execute inhuman feats. These feats occur in times of extreme danger - being followed, chased, shot at, or while breaking into secure buildings. As the group try to understand their new abilities and the virus that has infected them, they uncover a secret about the facility. ( )

Book description
Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage “sci-philes” who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot-if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer’s scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends- they’re a pack. They are Virals.
