David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, Ugly Colors, NY: Random House, Inc. 2010.

Ugly Colors feature the Uglydolls, a highly popular brand of cute, adorable, cartoon like monsters. The illustrations effectively demonstrate each color, but the adult-level humor wouldn't be appreciated by the little ones. Snappy one-liners include, "Red cars get pulled over more often," and when a broken yellow taxi is featured an Uglydoll offers the unfortunate taxi owner a lemon, to which it replies, "Got one, thanks." The humor would probably make it a good read aloud for the parents, but children wouldn't understand the jokes. Still, one can appreciate the brightly colored little guys. At best, this book could be for children ages 9-11. ( )

I love uglydolls, especially Babo, but this boardbook is pretty much a failure. Boardbooks, in format and by their very nature, are supposed to appeal to babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. A concept like "Colors" can be presented imaginatively, but simply. Unfortunately this book really complicates the "colors" concept with needless irony and adult-level humor. I still like it for the illustrations, but otherwise it's not worth the time it takes to read it (like 5 seconds) because no one in the target audience will understand the humor at all. ( )
