I really enjoyed Kizuna - a well written, well illustrated gay romance/drama. The plot moves backwards and forwards in time, so though I was a little confused in the beginning, by the end I was completely won over by the story and characters. Ranmaru and Kei are lovers and this series chronicles the ups and downs of their relationship.

Ranmaru is a champion kendo master and Kei is the illegitimate son of a yakuza mob boss. Although not part of the yakuza, this connection sometimes complicates their life. Kei and Ranmaru met for the first time in elementary school, went to high school together, and later live together as adults. We get to see all these different periods in the relationship, and the end result is very satisfying.

Kei also has a younger half-brother, Kai, who practices kendo and is obsessed with Ranmaru. Kai is a bit of a brat, and is more involved with the yakuza side of things. There is some mafia-related action, but the main plot focus is always on the feelings of the main characters. Yes, it's a bit over-dramatic at times, but it works.

I love the relationship between Ranmaru and Kei! This is a great read. Note, though, that this series is marked for "mature readers" and the sex scenes are very graphically depicted. ( )
