En 1956, sylvia plath rencontre Ted Hughes ; ce sont deux écrivains poètes. Mais Ted est un "braconnier" un sauvage, proche de la nature. Sylvia est plus intérieure, avec des secrets enfouis. Le livre, en courts chapitres donne la parole à des spectateurs, à des rencontres, qui, chacun, par leurs implications, nous font partager la vie du couple.
Les personnages vivent entre Londres, les US, le Canada et Paris ; en arrière fond, l'holocauste et l'exil, la famille de Sylvia vient d'Allemagne). Sylvia se suicide et ce livre tente d'élucider le destin tragique de cette poétesse.
