Decided to reread a middle school favorite, and it still holds up. DiTirlizzi also wrote The Spiderwick Chronicles (another childhood fave), and suffice it to say, his books have seriously influenced who I am today. The fascinating, imaginative worlds he creates--paired with his beautiful illustrations, are truly PEAK aesthetic for me. Bless the internet archive for having scanned copies (epubs and pdfs dont seem to have the full page illustrations at the beginning of each chapter) so I can binge the trilogy. Onto book 2! ( )

3.5 stars. Our latest road trip listen. A fantastical storyline with heart. ( )

Very creative world-building. Interesting, graphic-style illustrations. I got a bit bogged down with the actual storyline, though. ( )

I remember it like it was yesterday : I walked into my local bookstore and they had this in the newer release section. The cover drew me in but when I saw it was written/illustrated by Tony Diterlizzi himself, I knew I had to get it. A master at storytelling and his distinctive art style- Wondla (the trilogy as a whole) absolutely spellbound me. I could not put it down and it was such a refreshing read. It also has a wonderfully strong and admirable female lead! The engaging plot, the exquisite world-building, the charismatic characters, the fictional flora and fauna (that have some basis on actual nonfictional animals) cast me into that world and I was legitimately sad when the trilogy ended because I wanted it to continue and desired so much more. It's like if Star Wars met Alice in Wonderland, with maybe a hint of Wall-E. It's its own thing, unique, original and perfect for any kind of sci-fi or fantasy fan. It has a lot of heart, thought, excitement, action and immersion. The themes are survival, hope, dystopian, courage, acceptance (both of loss and differences), moving forward, morals, and despair. Everything has a purpose in this story and nothing feels dragged out or superfluous. It's in my top 5 favorite book series ever written.

(If you need an extra push, the author of the Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins- and the one for the Percy Jackson series -Rick Riordan- loves this series and reviewed them as well.) ( )

Book description
Eva Nine had never seen the actual sun before, or walked outdoors. In fact, she had never even seen another living person in all twelve years of her life. That changes when a marauding huntsman destroys her underground home and sends her fleeing for her life. She is desperate to find someone else who is like her, and a single clue gives her hope: a crumbling picture of a girl, a robot, an adult, and the word "WondLa".
