Brilliant book that looks at early photography in Dickensian London. Barnaby Grimes is a tick-tock lad, high-stacking his way across the rooftops of his city. Barnaby finds himself in the fiercely competitive world of early photography, where the rewards are immense but so are the risks. Clarissa Oliphant engages Barnaby to track her brother who has suddenly begun to act very strange. Her brother Laurence (unbeknown to Clarissa) had discovered the chemical process of developing photos. However, after an experiment goes disastrously wrong, Barnaby is on the trail of a mad chemist with a talent for disappearing into thin air. There is a phantom at large with murder on his mind as he has murdered Laurence with Clarissa's duelling sword. While Clarissa is being held in the local jail accused of the death of her brother, Barnaby is captured by the phantom. "I have suffered the torments of hell' whispered the phantom, ' now it is your turn Barnaby'. But just who is the phantom of Blood Alley? I liked this book as it had excellent twists and turns without being too hard to follow. ( )
