There are quite a few bios of Agee; I picked this one and it was interesting but more than I needed to know. His life was tragic, but the big tragedy was the death of his father, which Agee himself writes about exquisitely in A Death in The Family. I recommend reading both versions, (there's a new one that is better than the first, but the first includes a prose poem at the beginning, which is stunning [can be found elsewhere]}. After the death of his father, his life was a mixture of triumph and defeat, like everyone else's-OK, more interesting than everyone else's, but no more tragic. ( )
