Another weak issue.

The Untied States of America - Mario Milosevic

An old woman keeps a lonely vigil on the coast of Washington State. However, she is one of many as no other land is adjacent to the state anymore: generations back, the States split apart, caused by special 'pellets' that ordinary people could use to fissure rock. Allegorical and lyrical.

Iron Monk - Melissa Yuan-Innes

A promising scenario: a Chinese space ship whose crew are political dissenters is on its way to meet aliens in the asteroid belt. Five previous missions have not been heard from. The radiation shielding needs fixing and some crew show signs of an odd disease. And then it stops.

A passion for art - David D. Levine

A struggling art expert is hired to stop a string of strange robberies at a famous gallery. Cute but unbelievable.

Plague Birds - Jason Sanford

Set in what seems a post-collapse world in which people have regressed back to animalistic behaviour due to genetic melding of human and animal genes. A 'Plague Bird', an human controlling a powerful AI, arrives at Crista's village, to right a number of wrongs, not the least of which is Christa's lame leg, inflicted by a beserk lover.

Over water - Jon Ingold

A old man recounts a tangled tale of love and war from his early life, in praise of seeking knowledge from books. There are hints about the past of the archipelago environs described. Stylish, but ultimately empty. ( )
