Thanks to the AudioBookSync.com's summer program for YA Audio books, I was exposed and introduced to both this amazing book and it's author. As I started to listen to Sea Hearts during my drives, I was completely compelled to be lost in a different world by the telling of the story. Ms. Margo Lanagan is a brilliant author with an amazing touch for poetic writing. Her words simply string together in effortless beauty and deep meaning.

The basic story is a dark fairytale about Selkies - seals bewitched into beautiful wives for the men of Rollrock Island; however, there are so many other issues buried in this story. Parental love and how far will a woman go to do the right thing for her child? What effects bullying brings about not only to the people being bullied but also to the entire community? What about abandonment? And blindingly following another person without deeper consideration? What about imprisonment and holding others against their will? As I listened to this story unfold, all of these issues and more came to mind. And even though this story is based on fantasy, it does not read like an unbelievable story - I could almost imagine a place like Rollrock Island in the real world.

I highly recommend this book to all ages (probably high school and older). There is no bad language but a few older situations do pop up.
Also note, this book was renamed and republished under the name of "The Brides of Rollrock Island". ( )

2 stars for the audiobook & 2.5 stars for the book itself

Inspired by the folklore of Orkney & the Sheltland Islands about selkie folk (seals that become transformed to human shape). It seems a bit of a strange choice of topic for an Australian author but that is besides the point.

About the audio edition, narrated by Eloise Oxer and Paul English -- I don't know why it was but both narrators had sibilant S sounds that caused a screechy effect on all my listening devices which was extremely irritating. That is probably the studio's fault rather than the narrators but it did cause me to knock off a half star.

The book itself was told in a series of first person narratives. I felt that Misskaella Prout's character (which was pivotal to the whole plot) flip-flopped depending on the author's whim which bothered me. She starts off as a girl, not ordinary because of her powers, but not a 'witch'. Though Lanagan struggled to make her appear to be growing more bitter as she aged to make the 'revenge' idea more plausible, I didn't buy it. So when she appears to have become vengeful and malicious later on, it as if the author has said "Okay, now she is a witch not a person." For example, why should she set out to seduce Dominic Mallett? ( )

"On remote Rollrock Island, men make their living--and fetch their wives--from the sea." Six voices from three generations tell the haunting tale of the island's tragic history. ( )

Book description
On remote Rollrock Island, men go to sea to make their livings—and to catch their wives.

The witch Misskaella knows the way of drawing a girl from the heart of a seal, of luring the beauty out of the beast. And for a price a man may buy himself a lovely sea-wife. He may have and hold and keep her. And he will tell himself that he is her master. But from his first look into those wide, questioning, liquid eyes, he will be just as transformed as she. He will be equally ensnared. And the witch will have her true payment.

Margo Lanagan weaves an extraordinary tale of desire, despair, and transformation. With devastatingly beautiful prose, she reveals characters capable of unspeakable cruelty, but also unspoken love.
