Really liked these short stories and would love for many of them to be made into books. ( )

These are great short stories, especially the ones told by adolesecent girls. They have a real ring of truth to them - they don't feel manipulated or overworked, but fresh and immediate. I'll read whatever she writes next.

But I do hate the title. I get what she's saying and I looked up the poem to read in it's entirety, but still. ( )

A wonderful collection of shorts, mostly featuring young black women as protagonists. Evans is content to leave things unresolved in these stories, and the characters are what hold the collection together. There were a couple of stories that felt like slight missteps to me, but the collection in general is fantastic. ( )

If you're at all a fan of Zadie Smith, you'll probably like Evans, although obviously she's not English, etc... but she writes with a similar sharply-comedic sensibility. ( )

I can't wait until Evans has a novel out. Every story in this book breathes like a longer piece; every character is already blooming when the story opens. Amazing book - truly different from any other collection of short stories I've ever read.

Fearless, funny, and ultimately tender, Evans's stories offer a bold new perspective on the experience of being young and African-American or mixed-race in modern-day America.
