While Sabriel feels like a standalone book, I consider Lirael and Abhorsen as two parts of the same book, as such I'm writing this review about both of them. Many of my annoyances from Sabriel carry over into these books. The magic is still kind of hand-wavy and Nix still introduces new rules of the world in that "Oh by the way" manner. The main difference between Sabriel and Lirael/Abhorsen was that Sabriel didn't feel very exciting, while Lirael/Abhorsen very much did. Abhorsen in particular I read in little over a single day because I was absolutely hooked on the story. I know I said Lirael and Sam are whiny in Lirael, and I stand by that, especially since it means seeing them rise to the occasion in this one much more satisfying. I do love Sabriel because she's essentially cool and capable from the start (skiing into the Old Kingdom!! That's the best), but I'm very happy that the books are never formulaic or just does the same thing over and over. Complex characters and good plot is much better. I had forgotten a lot of these books so rereading them was almost like reading them for the first time, which was awesome. I especially loved going through all precincts of death this timre around - the ninth one was not at all what I expected and that is so good. Kinda wish that's how it actually is. no reviews | add a review

I think I initially (many years ago) didn't make it through this book because I was so upset about what happened right at the beginning.
The Disreputable Dog is my favorite character, no contest. I hope she shows up again.
