Exemplaire unique
On the flyleaf of the first volume a note in Dutch, signed by D. Elzevir, informs us that this copy, the only one printed on vellum, was made for the States of Holland at their expense. The execution of this book is admirable; it is perhaps the finest book in existence. I purchased it on the 19th of February, 1802, from an Amsterdam Jew for the moderate sum of 2,000 florins; my friend, Sir Richard Heber, several times offered me a thousand pounds sterling for it.
