I read a stack of these leveled readers from Appleton-Smith and too many are too awkward, imo. But this is a book that could be released in any format; it absolutely does not vibe 'for beginners.' I learned things, though I've been reading books about animals & habitats for half a century! (It did not occur to me that winter in the Sonoran Desert would be a time of food scarcity as the plants go dormant.) The illustrations are lovely, too.
I read a stack of these leveled readers from Appleton-Smith. Most, including this, have text that seems a bit awkward to me, because I'm a fluent reader. But the art in this one is absolutely lovely and I hope that I can find more by Bumas.

The other book from this batch that I do recommend is [b:Sonoran Desert Seasons|41041755|Sonoran Desert Seasons|Laura Appleton-Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1533382735l/41041755._SX50_.jpg|64073722].
A royal sheep learns that he is just as special as all the other royal sheep kept by the King and Queen of Caladeen. This is a beginning chapter book that is reminiscent of the parable of the good shepherd.
