Maria Bauer

1866 Beyond the Chestnut Trees, by Maria Bauer (read 8 Sep 1984) This is an unpretentious book written by an author born in 1919 who grew up in Czechoslovakia, and fled from there with her parents in 1938. She returns to Prague for a week 40 years later, and much of this book tells of her looking up persons and places associated with her life before 1939. She also tells of her own life. All in all, the book is engrossing and I thought well-done. I found portions of it moving, though one show more wonders about her talking of her father's infidelity to her mother. I don't think I would tell the world of such behavior--but maybe her view was it made the book more attention-attracting. The book was enjoyable to read. show less
